Alternative Energy Streams – An Overview

It looks like serious efforts to find the best alternative energy sources are being made by lots of countries as well as the USA and even many of America’s cities. One proof is the signing of the Kyoto Treaty, the foremost aim of which is to lessen greenhouse gases and pollutants.

Sustainable energy sources have proven to be of excellent help in reducing the amount of toxins, which are largely by-products of the use of fossil fuels. Sustainable sources also conserve the natural resources that people use as sources of energy. What are the most popular streams of sustainable energy? Here’s a list to give you a rudimentary knowledge of the matter.

1. Solar Power. This works by exploiting the sun’s rays to charge solar power batteries. The process converts the light coming from the sun into electricity. When the sun’s rays hit solar thermal panels, the power is then used to heat air or water. The sun’s rays can also hit parabolic mirrors. This process can produce steam by heating water. But you don’t need all these scientific processes to be able to profit from solar power. All you have to do is open the windows and blinds of your room to let the sunshine in. You’ll get an instant heater without having to use any processes for the conversion of this energy source.

To date, the main disadvantage of using solar energy was that it is restricted. You cannot use it at nighttime or during days when it is raining or even cloudy. This has been partly improved through the use of solar power stations. But they are so expensive that there aren’t many about.

2. Wind Power. The energy in the wind turns the fans of wind turbines to create electricity. Electricity is created through the use of an electrical generator. In the old days, windmills were built so that machinery could take the place of human physical labor. This included the pumping of water and the crushing of grain which were essential to farming.

Now there are large scale wind farms that make electricity. The end product is then dispersed through the national grids and small systems owned by private individuals to deliver electricity to far-flung areas and homes. There are many benefits to this kind of power. The main one, of course, is that it doesn’t create any by-products detrimental to the environment. And we will never run out of this source of renewable energy.

3. Geothermal Energy. This comes from underground. Holes are drilled in key locations and the hot rocks beneath make steam. This is then purified to be used to drive turbines. The latter then become a power source for electric generators.

To make sure that no harmful by-products are produced in the procedure, geothermal plants must be designed carefully, but once they have been set up, they are self-sufficient in creating energy.

4. Hydroelectric Energy. This power is generated through the use of dams that hold back water to drive generators and water turbines. Tidal power can also be employed if a dam is not suitable. The idea here is to make use of the kinetic energy of water.
